Music & the joy of playing
Between tradition and the future
Malmö Symphony Orchestra is a proud bearer of the tradition of the symphonic repertoire, but is also endeavouring to take it forward – into the future. In our modern society, with an entertainment industry that is constantly growing, nurturing the legacy of symphony music is our natural objective and our constant motivation. The journey of a work between conductors and over time, the varying interpretations of artistes and orchestras are part of the musical magic. The audience’s experience and the orchestra’s performance here and now will be the unique contribution of the MSO to the history of the work.
A unique sound and strength
The MSO presents around 100 concerts each season, with a broad repertoire. That makes huge demands on the musicians’ collective harmonic balance and the conductors’ interpretive capacity. Regardless of the epoch, our orchestra has a strong innate sense of musical gesture and an unparalleled sense of collective rhythm. Exactly that unique sense of rhythm is developed greatly in their work on current music.

The joy of playing always on the programme
Like our colleagues in other symphony orchestras we protect our standard repertoire. Taking care of our legacy, keeping the orchestra in good shape and giving the audience a frame of reference for our society’s serious music – that all goes without saying. In addition to that, we are very consciously working on our repertoire. Imaginative collaborative ventures with institutes, universities and orchestras in the region mean that the music of the 20th and 21st centuries constitutes a natural element of the schedules of programmes. 3-5 premiere performances each season also contribute to finding routes into the contemporary artistic expression. While individual programme foci provide room for more unusual works, the tradition of orchestral music is carried forward in thematic series. The MSO is probably the Swedish orchestra that has the strongest Bruckner tradition. To provide space for vocal power, an opera production is also staged each season.
